Volunteer work development, support and placement
AN important part of our work is as a Volunteer Centre. We actively support the ongoing development and expansion of all aspects of voluntary work and are involved in promoting public awareness and appreciation of the continuing need for the voluntary sector.
The basic aims of the Centre are to promote volunteering and to recruit, place and support volunteers, acting as a catalyst between those organisations seeking volunteer help and those looking to volunteer. Volunteers are interviewed on a one-to-one basis and asked to complete a skills register before being referred to one or more of the many local organisations, including our own direct services schemes. All information held on both volunteers and clients is kept strictly confidential.

People of all ages and from all sections of the community can benefit from becoming a volunteer, giving people the opportunity to use their skills to help others. Volunteering can also help people make new friends, develop new skills, build up self-esteem and confidence and possibly lead to employment. HANDS & Gillingham Volunteer Centre is a fully accredited member of Volunteering England, following their guidelines. We also operate Equal Opportunities, Health & Safety and Vulnerable Adult policies and arrange CRB checks where appropriate. The Centre has also adopted the PQASO self-monitoring system to ensure it maintains its already high standards. The Centre liaises with other voluntary and community organisations as well as local statutory authorities.
